Paul Wheaton and Jocelyn Campbell first share about their tidepooling experience while on the Oregon coast. They then finish going through a list of books, mostly related to gardening and permaculture, that have made an impact on Paul.
Here are the books they discuss: Allan Savory‘s Holistic Management, on reversing desertification through the grazing of large ruminants. Michael Pollan’s The Botany of Desire
The Omnivore’s Dilemma
In Defense of Food
He quotes a lot of Weston A. Price‘s work.
The Good Life by Scott and Helen Nearing, who are back to the land icons. They like building with stone, and harvest their own concrete.
Paul talks about “bread labor and soul labor.”
One Straw Revolution by Masanobu Fukuoka.
Mike Oehler‘s $50 and Up Underground House Book, and Earth-Sheltered Solar Greenhouse. The book, Shelter, filled with pictures of all kinds of alternative buildings, and Homework, which is sort of a part two.
Diana Leafe Christian‘s books on community: Creating a Life Together and Finding Community.
The People of Cascadia by Heidi Bohan talks about how the agriculture of the Native Americans from the Pacific Northwest resembled permaculture.
A book on pole construction, which describes pole houses and keeping the poles dry.
The Earth Care Manual, and Permaculture in a Nutshell by Patrick Whitefield.
The Man Who Planted Trees on how planting trees brings back creeks.
A companion planting book, Carrots Love Tomatoes, (even though he doesn’t worry too much about companion planting anymore), and a Troy-Bilt Rototiller book for its thorough gardening advice, (with the exception of rototilling).
Paul shares about three books that are aesthetically pleasing to look through, such as one with a terra cotta couch, one on country living, and one with pictures of the temples at Damanhur.
Lastly, he shares what books he would like to read: something on progressive beekeeping, and Botany in a Day, and Forest Gardening by Dave Jacke.
