127 – Sepp Holzer’s Permaculture Chapter 2 Part 3

Paul Wheaton continues reviewing chapter 2 of Sepp Holzer’s Permaculture with Kelda Miller, this time on animal shelters. Paul compares Sepp shelters to Mike Oehler structures. Both have a thick earthen roof. They talk about quickly made, less permanent structures for pigs. They talk about different woods you could use. These shelters can be used for animals, or as root cellars. Paul also uses his wofati design for comparison. In all designs, you don’t want water pooling behind the structure. Paul likes it when the openings to the structures are on the uphill slope. They talk about sun exposure, and east facing openings. Sepp writes that larch and robinia last the longest for his roundwood shelters. Paul talks about how pigs will not poop in their homes, and are very clean when you give them the opportunity to be clean. Paul talks about wood poles aging fastest at soil level. Mike Oehler will char the lower end of the wood, or wrap the bottom in black garbage bags, and Paul might use some borax at the pole’s base. Paul is not a huge proponent of biochar. They talk about the wagon wheel method, and what might be better. Sepp uses straw to insulate his cellars in winter.
